Argenta Private Capital Limited (APCL) recently hosted the webinar “Why Investors are turning to Lloyd’s for portfolio diversification.” The webinar featured Kate Tongue, Executive Director at APCL, and Chris Moore, Head of Apollo ibott Syndicate 1971. Together, they shared insights on their experience in the Lloyd’s market, modern investment structures, the current market outlook, and how investors can access this unique asset class.
Lloyd’s is a market with a long and distinguished history, originating in Edward Lloyd’s coffee house in 1680. Today, it continues to evolve, combining tradition with innovation. The webinar, hosted by India Cornett, Business Development Manager at APCL, provided an overview of the Lloyd’s market and explored how both Kate and Chris contribute in their respective roles.
A shared focus between both firms, beyond their participation in the same market, is their commitment to innovation and building a market fit for today and the future. In March this year, Lloyd’s CEO Patrick Tiernan highlighted the market’s forward-thinking approach, emphasising the importance of nurturing future talent and embedding innovation within its annual strategy. As Chris noted, “Lloyd’s will be at the forefront of insuring cutting-edge technology.”
Chris leads Apollo ibott 1971, a syndicate within the Apollo Group, which exemplifies this innovative spirit. One of Apollo’s original founders, Neil Armstrong, believed that insurance plays a critical role in enabling innovation and economic growth. Reflecting this philosophy, Apollo ibott operates as a highly data-driven syndicate, standing out by offering embedded insurance solutions tailored to the fast-growing digital economy.
Where does Argenta Private Capital fit into this? To participate in the Lloyd’s market, investors must operate through a members’ agent such as APCL. Kate Tongue explained that a members’ agent supports clients throughout the entire investment lifecycle, including structuring, reporting, accounting, tax, and company secretarial services.
For investors, accessing the Lloyd’s market involves providing capital to syndicates. In doing so, investors effectively support underwriting activities and share in the resulting profits or losses.
Like other types of investment advisors, APCL’s research team reviews, analyses, and recommends opportunities proposed by syndicates accepting third capital, based on performance analysis and risk rating. As a result, the firm forms longstanding relationships with these syndicates, such as Apollo Ibott, resulting in many of APCL’s 450 clients supporting Chris’ underwriting team with their capital.
Argenta also assists with exit or succession planning. Investors access the Lloyd’s market through a Limited Liability Partnership or Limited Company, which can either be newly established or acquired from existing participants.
Kate highlighted the importance of improving accessibility within the market, saying, “I really enjoy making Lloyd’s more accessible and being part of the innovation we’ve seen in the market.” Chris echoed this sentiment, speaking about insurance’s real-world impact to enable innovation across industries. He stated, "Insurance doesn't become a cost on the balance sheet. It becomes a business enabler."

With a syndicate supporting risks related to autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence, innovation remains a central focus. Chris described insurance as "not here to slow you down. I am the brakes that allow you to go faster." Third-party capital gives syndicates like Apollo ibott the flexibility and diversification needed to support rapid growth, especially in technology-focused sectors.
Building on this theme, APCL launched “Starter Homes” in 2024 in collaboration with Helios Underwriting PLC. This initiative introduces innovation for investors, providing access to a diversified portfolio of syndicates, such as Apollo ibott through an approach called leasehold capacity (where investors effectively rent syndicate capacity rather than purchasing it), enabling more flexible entry and exit, as well as efficient capital deployment without the need to acquire freehold capacity. As Kate described, the concept is akin to “owning a home and renting the furniture.”
With strong market performance in recent years, high-quality capacity has become increasingly scarce. Starter Homes help address this challenge by offering access to a diversified portfolio of syndicates, including several of Lloyd’s top-performing participants. However, it is important to note that underwriting at Lloyd’s carries inherent risk, and investors may be exposed to underwriting losses.
Finally, traditional participation in Lloyd’s requires investors to be onboarded by September in order to take part in the annual capacity auctions held in October and November.
In summary, the Lloyd’s market continues to demonstrate its relevance and resilience by combining a rich heritage with a strong commitment to innovation. As we approach a new phase in the market cycle, the webinar highlighted the market’s consistent role in supporting business and investment portfolios. As Kate put it, "it's really ensuring that you've got that well-diversified portfolio within Lloyd's to weather the different cycles." Syndicates such as Apollo ibott help make this possible.

As highlighted throughout the webinar, increasing accessibility, evolving investment structures such as Starter Homes, and the growing role of data and technology are making Lloyd’s an increasingly attractive option for portfolio diversification. While investors must remain mindful of the inherent risks associated with underwriting using both freehold and leasehold capacity, the market offers a unique opportunity to participate in a dynamic, globally significant sector that actively supports innovation and economic progress.
If you would like to hear more about the Lloyd’s market, we would be delighted to speak further.
